女の人 | woman is a series comprised of six nude photographs depicting women living in Japanese society. The Japanese strive for perfection, sometimes to such an extent that reality seems to fade and fantasy starts to take over. Nudity is censored by law as the naked body should not be shown in images; on the other end, it is common to bathe naked in municipal hot springs (温泉, onsen) or public bath houses (銭湯, sentou) and Japan is known for producing unique and often extreme porn which, in turn, censors genitals and pubic hair. These examples show the paradoxical relationship Japan has with nudity, but fail to show nudity in a real way. Countering this trend, the photographs depict the women, naked, in their own bedrooms.
「女の人 / woman」は、日本に暮らす女性達の姿を収めた6枚のヌードポートレート集だ。他文化と比較すると常に完璧であろうと勤しんでいるように見える日本人だが、過剰な期待はときに現実を見えなくさせ、空想をよりリアルに感じさせる。独創的かつ過激な内容で有名な国産アダルトビデオなどでも裸体の描写が法律で規制されており、性器や陰毛は公開されていない。その反面、温泉や銭湯で他人との共同入浴はごく普通のことである。裸体と深いつながりを持ちながらも、ありのままの身体を見せる事を避けるーー矛盾しているような日本社会のあり方に抗うように、自分の部屋で撮影された女性たちは凛々しく、偽りのないヌードを見せつける。
